One of the biggest decisions homeowners face when starting a painting project is choosing the right color. It sounds easy enough, until you’re staring at a wall of swatches and realizing just how many shades of white or gray exist.
At Hull Painting, we’ve helped a lot of folks through this process, and we get it. Color can change everything — not just how a room looks, but how it feels. Whether you’re painting one room or your whole house, here are a few simple tips to help guide you in the right direction.
Start with How You Want the Space to Feel
Before you dive into colors, think about the mood you want to create. Are you going for something calming and soft? Or maybe you want something bold that makes a statement?
- For a calm, relaxing feel, go with soft blues, greens, or warm neutrals.
- If you want something cozy and inviting, try earth tones or warm whites.
- Want a dramatic look? Deep colors like navy, charcoal, or rich greens can add depth and character.
Mood is a great place to start. It gives the color a purpose.
Look at What You Already Have
Unless you’re redoing everything from scratch, your new paint color needs to work with what’s already in the room. That includes your floors, trim, furniture, and even lighting.
If you have warm wood floors or cool-toned countertops, your paint should complement those. Bring in samples of these materials or take photos to reference as you choose paint colors.
Sample Before You Commit
Paint can look very different on the wall than it does in the can or under the hardware store lights. Always test a few samples on your actual walls. Put them in different spots — near windows, in corners, and under artificial light — and check how they look at different times of day.
You’ll get a much better sense of what the color really looks like in your space.
Keep It Simple, or Don’t
Neutrals are a great option if you want something timeless and flexible. Whites, grays, and beiges are easy to live with and work well with most styles.
But if you love color, don’t be afraid to use it. An accent wall, colorful cabinets, or a bold front door can make your home feel more personal and unique.
There’s no rulebook. It’s all about what feels right for you and your space.
